Abstract

This research has been carried out to receive opinions of teacher candidates of Turkish Language and Literature about the effects of IT on Turkish. The study group is limited to the 84 teacher candidates of Turkish Language and Literature, who are studying at formation program, Faculty of Education, Trakya University in 2014-2015 academic years. The scope of study and thematic structure for descriptive analysis have been determined in accordance with literature review and opinions of experts. In this respect, teacher candidates were asked to write a composition about effects of IT on Turkish. Descriptive analysis technique and descriptive statistics were performed to analyse the obtained data from the compositions written by the teacher candidates. Moreover, direct quotations were used to reflect the opinions of teacher candidates. According to the obtained results of the study, the teacher candidates are of the opinion that IT have negative effect on the Turkish. However, teacher candidates expressed negative opinions on the uses of English word in Turkish, spelling and punctuation errors and erroneous abbreviations in IT. With these results in mind, it has become evident that the conscious use of IT is necessary. The IT courses that should be offered at all levels of education are significant in preventing the adverse effects of unconscious use of IT. For the further research, it is suggested that studies regarding the conscious use of IT should be carried out. In addition, with help of these studies utilizing IT facilities, awareness can be raised with reference to the importance of language rules and its necessity in communication.
