Abstract

Greening the Literary Classroom through the Film ‘The Lorax’ is a descriptive−interpretive study anchored on Ausubel Learning Theory and Aristotle’s Meaningful Theory. It determined the literariness of the film presented in environment−related sequences with the aid of cinematic elements; the environmental laws and principles violated by the film’s characters based on the issues they caused; the environmental value positions based on the characters’ belief statements; and the research participants’ modes of actions, reflective of their environmental ethics; which were the  bases of the researcher in the designing of session guides, showing the greenness of literature and in consolidating inputs for curricular revision. The literary concepts evident in “The Lorax” confirm the literariness of the film. Findings showed that the film’s characters caused a greater number of environmental issues which are in violation of Philippine environmental laws and the UN Conference on Human Environment principles. Based on the belief statements, “The Lorax” characters immortalize a significant number of environmental value positions. The research participants indicated modes of citizen actions which revolve around ecomanagement, consumer action, persuasion, and political; wherefrom their ethical standards were based. These results enabled the researcher to design session guides showing greenness of literature and suggest inputs for curricular revision.
